Jurista estadounidense. Defendió su primera causa cuando todavía era menor de edad y se recibió de abogado a los 21 años. Se convirtió en abogado de la corporación minicipal de Jamestown, N.Y. En su condición de abogado jefe de la oficina de impuestos internos de EE.UU. (1934), encausó con éxito a Andrew W. Mellon por evasión tributaria. Se desempeñó como fiscal general adjunto (1938–39) y fiscal general (1940–41). En 1941 fue designado por el pdte. Franklin D. Roosevelt para un cargo en la Corte Suprema, donde se desempeñó hasta 1954. Infundió a sus dictámenes siempre bien redactados una mezcla de liberalismo y nacionalismo. En 1945–46 se desempeñó como fiscal jefe de EE.UU. en los juicios de
Nuremberg.
